Laundry defeats people not because any step is hard but because of its structure: five separate tasks separated by long waits, with no external prompt at any handover, and a failure state that resets your progress. It is close to a worst-case design for a system with unreliable task initiation.
Why this specific chore
Compare it with washing up, which is one continuous action with a visible end. Laundry is:
- Gather
- Load and start
- Wait 90 minutes
- Move to dryer or hang
- Wait hours
- Remove
- Fold
- Put away
Each numbered step is a separate initiation. Nothing prompts you at any of them. And the waits are long enough that the task drops entirely out of working memory — Barkley’s model, summarised by CHADD, Executive Function Skills, places nonverbal working memory at the centre of executive function, and holding an intention across ninety minutes of unrelated activity is exactly what it does least reliably.
Then there is the punishment. Leave the wash too long and it smells, so you must rewash it. The task actively reverses your progress, which is unusual and demoralising.
Where it actually breaks
Between the wash and the dry is the most common failure. The wash finishes, no alarm fires, and the load sits until it needs redoing.
Between dry and put away is the second. Clean clothes reach a basket, a chair, or a bed, and stay there. The clean pile becomes permanent furniture, and people start dressing from it — which works, right up until it merges with the dirty pile and nobody can tell which is which.
Fixes that target the structure
Alarm at every handover, not at the start
The wash starting is not the problem. Set an alarm for when it finishes, and a second for when the drying should be done. Externalising the handover removes the memory requirement entirely.
Never start a wash you cannot finish today
Starting at nine at night guarantees it sits overnight. Treat starting a wash as a commitment to being available for step four.
Delete the folding step
Folding adds a whole additional initiation for a purely cosmetic benefit. Open bins by category — one for shirts, one for underwear, one for everything else — mean clean clothes go directly from dry to away in a single action. Wrinkled clothes in a drawer beat clean clothes on a chair for six weeks.
Reduce the number of loads
Sorting by colour creates more loads, and more loads means more handovers, and every handover is a failure point. Fewer, larger loads on a cold wash is a real reduction in the number of chances to stall.
Fix the clean pile with a container
If clean clothes always end up in a basket, make that basket the official destination. A labelled basket you dress from is a system. The same basket unlabelled is a failure. The difference is genuinely just the decision to call it the destination.
Anchor it to a day
“Laundry on Sunday” survives better than “when it needs doing,” because the second requires you to notice, and noticing is unreliable. Sunday arrives whether you notice or not.
Common questions
Why can I do it fine when someone is coming over?
Because an external deadline supplies the urgency that internal regulation is not generating. The capability was never missing.
Is it worth using a laundry service?
If it is affordable, it removes several handovers at once. There is no prize for doing every chore personally, and a chore that never actually completes has a real cost.
How do I stop rewashing?
The alarm at the wash-finish handover is the single fix. Nearly all rewashing traces to that one missed step.
